A personal drum clinic...? This is like the drum clinics you read about and hear about and sometimes go to, but it's one-on-one and it's in your own home... Think of it as a doctor's house call. It has been designed for anyone who wants a quick single troubleshooting 'hit' on their own kit and drumming style. Instead of the usual 30-minute or 50-minute lesson (which goes in a flash when you are working intensely), you choose a longer session of 2 hours or more. I arrive at your house with a drum kit, a sampler and recording equipment. Prior to my arrival we will have discussed your particular needs so I will have a background on the areas of your drumming that you wish to be addressed. I set up my equipment while you go through a 5-minute hands and feet warm-up routine. You are going to be playing a lot during the clinic, so it is important that you are prepared mentally and physically. We commence the analysis. During the clinic I may record you playing particular patterns or phrases. We then analyse each recording and discuss areas of improvement. Issues to address can be physical ones, such as how to achieve a broader dynamic range on the snare drum. They can also be mental, such as how can I alter my style, yet still feel positive that I'm playing well. When you are confident that each particular issue is resolved, we move on to the next area. You will receive a copy of the recorded sections so you can remind yourself in future, should you forget. There are often two ways of doing most things on the drum set and the heel up/ heel down on the bass drum and hi-hat pedals is a good example. For this example, we would examine ways of improving your posture and footwork to increase your ability, speed or power. To fully achieve your potential as a drummer, getting both sides of the brain working is another area to investigate. We would try open-style and cross-stick playing combinations to improve this. Re-arranging the drum kit is a fun way of getting you thinking 'outside of the box'. The list of things to look at is endless, so it's really up to you... Please contact me here if you want to discuss what a Personal Drum Clinic can do for you. |
